How the Yankees were built

The 2005 American League East champions are a team mostly assembled by current general manager Brian Cashman, whose eight-year tenure is the longest of any GM under George Steinbrenner. However, the team's roots date back to 1985, when Clyde King oversaw the signing of then-17-year-old Bernie Williams. The Yankees went through five GMs (Woody Woodward, Lou Piniella, Bob Quinn and Harding Peterson) in five years before settling down under Gene Michael. Michael lasted five years before giving way to Bob Watson, who served in the position for three years before making way for Cashman. Ruben Sierra is in his third tour of duty with the Yankees, while Tino Martinez, Al Leiter and Ramiro Mendoza are on their second. Alan Embree and Mark Bellhorn both signed with the Yankees this season after being put on waivers by the Red Sox and clearing them.
