Yanks go for the sweep

Yanks are thinking sweep in Rangers finale

Following victories by Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina, the Yankees will now turn to starter Jaret Wright to complete a sweep of solid starting pitching and the Texas Rangers in the series finale Wednesday.

Wright was roughed up in his last outing, giving up five earned runs and lasting just 2 2/3 innings in the Blue Jays' 7-3 victory on July 21.

"I think [this start] is important," said Yankees manager Joe Torre. "He's such a competitor; he beats himself up pretty good when he doesn't get the job done."

After tossing six shutout innings and striking out 10 on July 7, Wright has given up eight runs over his last eight innings constituting two starts (at Chicago, at Toronto)

"You don't want it to mount on the negative side, because this game is all about believing you can do something. The more success you can have, the less the negative stuff creeps in your thinking."

Wright has started three games at Ameriquest Field, and is 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA.

Pitching matchup
NYY: RHP Jaret Wright (6-6, 4.71 ERA)
Wright has allowed left-handed batters to hit at a .340 clip and is 1-3 with a 5.00 ERA lifetime against the Rangers. Wright was handed the loss in a 6-2 Rangers' victory at Yankee Stadium on May 18. He gave up three runs over six innings.

TEX: LHP John Rheinecker (4-4, 5.13)
Rheinecker, a 27-year-old rookie, will be making his first start against the Yankees. He has gone 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA over his last four starts, but is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA at home this season. Rheinecker draws comparisons to Chicago White Sox starter Mark Buehrle; both are left-handed, work quickly and throw a high percentage of strikes.

Player to watch
Miguel Cairo has amassed clutch hits in both Yankees victories in Texas. He had a two-run double in the fourth inning of Monday's 6-2 victory, then slapped a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead on Tuesday. Cairo is hitting .304 against left-handed pitchers this season.
