Big inning lifts Yankees past the Pirates

Pirates at the plate: Jose Castillo stroked a seventh-inning single off Kyle Farnsworth, scoring Michael Ryan with Pittsburgh's run.

Yankees at the plate: Jason Giambi's grand slam, a towering shot to right, highlighted a seven-run New York fourth inning. Melky Cabrera brought in the first run with a single to left, while Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui also picked up RBIs. Alex Rodriguez tripled to left-center before leaving for a pinch-runner and Josh Phelps singled in his first two at-bats.

Pirates on the mound: Zach Duke threw three scoreless innings before being battered in the fourth. Duke -- who allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings -- issued a bases-loaded walk to Jeter and was tagged for Giambi's third home run of the spring.

Yankees on the mound: Mike Mussina turned in his most impressive outing of the spring, allowing three hits over five shutout innings in his fourth exhibition start. Mussina walked one and struck out two. Mariano Rivera relieved Mussina and pitched a scoreless inning.

Grapefruit League records: Pirates 6-12-1; Yankees 11-6-1.

Up next: The Yankees travel to Dunedin, Fla., to see the Blue Jays on Monday, facing off at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Jeff Karstens is scheduled to start for New York, with right-hander Tomo Ohka going for Toronto.

The Pirates will head to Clearwater to play the Phillies at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Ian Snell is scheduled to start for Pittsburgh, with right-hander Adam Eaton going for Philadelphia.
