Yankees at the plate: Jason Giambi walked, doubled and singled in his three at-bats, driving in a run. Melky Cabrera added an RBI single, while Alex Rodriguez plated another run on a groundout. Angel Chavez and Kevin Reese each added an RBI double in the eighth.

Tigers at the plate: Gary Sheffield homered off his old club with a three-run shot in the opening inning, then added a sacrifice fly in the second. Curtis Granderson had three hits and scored twice, while Placido Polanco added three singles.

Yankees on the mound: Detroit's first four batters scored off New York starter Jeff Karstens before two more came home in the second. Eight of the 14 batters he faced reached base safely before he departed with right elbow stiffness following the second inning.

Tigers on the mound: Jason Grilli, who earned the starting assignment when the Tigers moved Justin Verlander's start to a Minor League game, gave up two runs on five hits over three innings. He hit the upper 90s on the Marchant Stadium radar gun. Wilfredo Ledezma followed with two innings, allowing a run on three straight hits in the fifth after striking out three of the first four batters he faced.

Grapefruit League records: Yankees 12-10, Tigers 17-10-1.

Up next: The Tigers host the Nationals on Monday in a 1:05 p.m. ET start at Joker Marchant Stadium. Mike Maroth will take the mound opposite Jason Bergmann.

The Yankees return to Legends Field to host the Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. ET contest. Kei Igawa will start against Zack Segovia.
