Clemens tries to snap winless streak

Roger Clemens will try for the fourth time to collect win No. 350 when the Yankees open their series against the Twins at Yankee Stadium on Monday night.

With a win, Clemens would become the first Major Leaguer to win 350 games since Warren Spahn passed the milestone for Milwaukee on Sept. 29, 1963 -- a game that current Yankees manager Joe Torre caught.

Winning No. 350, however, may be easier said than done for Clemens. Since the Rocket's return to the Majors with a victory in his June 9 debut, he has yet to win a game.

Clemens has struggled in his last few starts, recording losses that bumped his ERA up to 5.32, up from 4.50 in his opening start against the Pirates at Yankee Stadium. In his last outing, the right-hander faltered in the sixth inning against the Orioles, allowing four runs on four hits -- including a three-run homer -- and walking one. Against Baltimore, Clemens was unable to record a strikeout for the first time in 200 straight games.

The Twins will open the series with second-year starter Boof Bonser on the mound. Having made one career start against the Yankees, Bonser is 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA in 4 2/3 innings.

Pitching matchup
NYY: RHP Roger Clemens (1-3, 5.32 ERA)
In his 43 starts against the Twins, Clemens is 23-13 with a 3.02 ERA and is tied with Jack Morris to lead the Majors in career victories against Minnesota. Clemens has started eight times against the Twins as a member of the Yankees, posting a 4-2 record with a 1.83 ERA.

MIN: RHP Boof Bonser (5-4, 4.65 ERA)
Bonser had a solid start on Wednesday against the Blue Jays but wasn't able to sustain his effectiveness through all of his six innings on the mound. The right-hander will look to regain control of his breaking ball on Monday night, after citing it as part of his difficulties in the loss to Toronto.

Player to watch
Jeff Cirillo is batting .308 in 26 career at-bats against Clemens. This season, Cirillo is batting .272 and has driven in 16 runs.
