Rogers Clemens hasn't pitched at Rogers Centre since March 31, 2003, but the Rocket is set and ready to relaunch against the Blue Jays on Tuesday in Toronto.
It will be Clemens' 12th start of the season and 49th against the Blue Jays in his career. The right-hander is coming off a rough outing against the White Sox, in which he turned in his shortest non-injury-related start since July 23, 1995, against the Twins.
Despite the subpar outing, Clemens has kept his control in check, as the 45-year-old has walked only two of the last 66 batters he's faced to lead off an inning, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
In his last start against the Jays at Yankee Stadium on July 18, Clemens recorded a no-decision in a 6-1 Yankees victory. He went six innings and allowed nine hits and one run.
Countering for the Jays will be Josh Towers, who owns a career 2-8 record and 5.03 ERA against the Yankees in 13 appearances.
NYY: RHP Roger Clemens (3-5, 4.23 ERA)
Because of an error, Clemens surrendered eight runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in 1 2/3 innings in his last start against the White Sox. In 41 starts against the Jays, Clemens owns a 20-11 record and 3.44 ERA.
TOR: RHP Josh Towers (5-8, 5.17 ERA)
Towers has turned in two mediocre starts in his last two trips to the mound, lasting 5 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits in both outings. In his last start against the Rays, Towers walked two and struck out four in a loss.
Player to watch
Alex Rios has had his way with Clemens in the few times the two have faced each other. In six career at-bats vs. the Rocket, Rios has four hits, including a triple and home run.
