Yanks plate 10 runs in inning vs. O's

BALTIMORE -- Jorge Posada led off the fourth inning for the Yankees on Saturday night, and when he came up to the plate again there were still no outs in the inning.

All nine Yankees batters scored in the 10-run inning, including two from first baseman Shelley Duncan. The achievement was more impressive because Yankees stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez weren't in the lineup -- they are resting for the postseason.

"It's fun to manage the stars," manager Joe Torre said. "But it's also fun watching these kids mature."

Baltimore went through three pitchers during the half-inning. Starter Daniel Cabrera worked six batters, lefty Kurt Birkins threw to four, striking out one, and right-hander Victor Santos had the final three batters, getting shortstop Alberto Gonzalez to ground into a double play to record the third out 13 batters after the fourth inning started.

After the offensive outburst, New York hung on for an 11-10 win in the second of a three-game series against the Orioles. The big inning saved pitcher Andy Pettitte from taking a loss.

"That was an incredible inning," Pettitte said. "That I got a win is pretty unbelievable."

The inning started with three singles, then Gonzalez reached on a throwing error from the shortstop. A double from Melky Cabrera brought in two, and Wilson Betemit singled in another.

Once the first pitching change was completed, Bobby Abreu walked, setting up a Jason Giambi double and Robinson Cano single. Posada struck out in his second plate appearance, the inning's first out.

Duncan then followed with his seventh home run of the season, a blast to left field on a 3-2 pitch. It would be the final offense of the fourth, as Bronson Sardinha walked and Gonzalez ended the inning with his double play.

It was a huge inning, but the team's record was not broken. The Yankees scored 10 runs on July 22 against Tampa Bay, also in the fourth inning.
