Granderson, Uggla named Players of Month
In the running for the Major League home run crown, Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson on Tuesday was named the American league Player of the Month for August.

Dan Uggla, who carried the longest hitting streak in the Majors this season to 33 games in the middle of the month, was given the award in the NL.

Granderson hit 10 of his 38 home runs in August -- tying him with Uggla and Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria for the most in the month -- and he trails Toronto's Jose Bautista by two homers for the overall lead on the season. Granderson also hit .286 and drove in 29 runs during the month, notching five doubles and two triples. His 29 runs scored were a Major League high.

Granderson hit a grand slam against the A's at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 25, when the Bombers set a record with three grand slams in one game.

Uggla collected 33 hits in August, coincidentally matching the number of games his hit streak reached. The streak was snapped on Aug. 14 against the Cubs and was the longest by a Braves player since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966. It was the second longest in franchise history, behind Tommy Holmes' 37-game streak in 1945.

Uggla hit .340 on the month, good for eighth in the National League. On the season, he's hitting .237 with 32 home runs and 70 RBIs. Bouncing back from a forgettable first half in which he hit .185, he's hit .335 since the All-Star break.

"It's cool and I'm appreciative of it," Uggla said of the award. "But I'm not concerned with individual stuff. From the slow start to where I am now, it's a pretty cool accomplishment."

Granderson's was hitting .271 with a .374 on-base percentage and a Major League-high 109 RBIs entering Tuesday's action. He's also stolen 24 bases.
