Yanks toss fans accused of theft attempt

NEW YORK -- Two Yankees fans were caught trying to take home a piece of the last opener at the Stadium.

Witnesses reported seeing 41-year-old John Bunjaporte and 39-year-old Keith O'Rourke trying to remove screws from the decorative bunting during Tuesday's Opening Day game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

The red, white and blue flag-like bunting usually is draped throughout the stadium on Opening Day and during the playoffs.

Both were charged with attempted larceny and criminal mischief, and each charge is punishable by up to one year imprisonment and/or fines. The two were detained and booked and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Yankees have also revoked their season-ticket accounts.

Bronx prosecutors said that the men are scheduled to respond to the charges on May 19.

A phone message left for Bunjaporte at his Port Chester home hasn't been returned. There's no published number for O'Rourke at his West Harrison home.

"The Yankees look forward to making this final season at Yankee Stadium a magical event for every fan," said COO Lonn Trost. "This type of destructive behavior will not be tolerated, from the first game of the season through the last."
