Jeter eyes Monday return to lineup

|
BOSTON -- Derek Jeter has bounced back and forth between the visiting clubhouse and the dugout during the Yankees' first two games at Fenway Park, putting on his uniform and a jacket and playing the role of cheerleader as best possible.

Truth be told, Jeter hasn't been able to do a whole lot during the Yankees' weekend series in Boston. After Sunday's game, he'll board the charter flight with the rest of the players, but since straining his left quadriceps in Monday's game, Jeter has quickly run out of ways to fill his time.

"You can only eat so much during the day," Jeter said.

Playing baseball would certainly correct the dilemma, and the Yankees believe Jeter is getting closer to doing that. One day after taking ground balls and jogging lightly, Jeter went through the paces of a full workout before Sunday's game and remains on track to play on Monday at St. Petersburg.

"I don't see any reason why not," Jeter said.

Jeter will have missed six games by the time the Yankees touch down in Tampa around 4 a.m. ET, sitting out for both the Red Sox and Royals series. Having watched most of the games on television while receiving treatment, Jeter was not concerned that he has not faced pitching since Monday.

"Concern? No," Jeter said. "Why worry about it? There's nothing you can do to change it."

In other injury news, the Yankees plan to have catcher Jorge Posada throw on Monday to test his strained right shoulder. Posada has not caught since Tuesday at Kansas City, where he complained that his throwing arm felt "dead," but he has been able to see action as New York's designated hitter.

Melky Cabrera was held out of the lineup on Sunday, but manager Joe Girardi said it was just to give him a day off. Johnny Damon started in center field with Hideki Matsui manning left field.
