Rasner last pitched in the Majors last May 19, taking the loss in a start against the Mets at Shea Stadium. He was hit on the right hand by a one-hopper in that game and underwent surgery to have a fractured index finger repaired. He was placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season.
But Rasner has come back strong this year, and the Yankees are hoping he can lead them to a third straight win.
"He has been known for being somewhat of a slow starter," said Girardi. "But he has thrown very well in Triple-A. When you talk to [Triple-A manager] Dave Miley and [pitching coach] Rafael Chavez down there, it's not like it's a mistake, like he's getting away with stuff. He's throwing the ball very well."
Girardi said that Rasner has built enough strength to throw up to 110 pitches.
"Let the guys behind you play," Girardi said. "Keep it moving, keep the line moving. Keep the infielders and outfielders on their toes."
SEA: RHP Carlos Silva (3-0, 2.79 ERA)
Silva hasn't received a decision in his past two starts, but he has pitched seven innings in five of his six starts and has gone 5-0 since last losing last September.
NYY: RHP Darrell Rasner (Season debut)
Rasner made six Major League starts last season, going 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA.
The Yankees will have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster before Sunday's game to create room for Rasner. ... Derek Jeter's double in the third inning on Saturday was No. 390 for his career, putting him past Joe DiMaggio and moving into sole possession of fifth place on the Yankees' all-time list. ... The Yankees have won 13 of their last 18 games against the Mariners at Yankee Stadium. ... Starter Chien-Ming Wang, who improved to 6-0 on Friday, isn't expected to miss a start due to a cramp he suffered in his right hand. ... Reliever Kyle Farnsworth was available on Saturday. He has felt a crack in his knees at times, one that Girardi described as similar to a knuckle cracking.
