"Every game is big," Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher said. "I don't care if we're playing the Kansas City Royals, the Oakland A's, whoever. It doesn't matter. Every game is big."
For today's purposes, it's the Athletics, against whom New York has two more contests this weekend before a final 10-game stretch against the Twins, Blue Jays and Red Sox. New York's magic number to secure a postseason berth has been reduced to seven, and the magic number to clinch the AL East is 12.
The Orioles have an all-AL East slate remaining, hosting the Blue Jays and Red Sox before traveling to St. Petersburg, where the Rays sit 6 1/2 games back of New York as they slide out of contention in the division. Tampa Bay is 4 1/2 games out of a Wild Card spot.

This is how the teams would match up: Postseason Bracket »
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
