Teixeira a late scratch with ankle bruise

NEW YORK -- First baseman Mark Teixeira was a last-minute scratch from Wednesday's starting lineup for the Yankees' game against the Rangers due to a bruised right ankle, but the injury isn't considered serious.

Teixeira suffered the injury while sliding hard into second base -- taking out Elvis Andrus -- in the fourth inning of Tuesday's 12-3 Yankees win. X-rays taken on Teixeira's ankle following the game were negative.

"I just want to give it a day," Teixeira said to team spokesperson Jason Zillo. "We will see where we're at [Thursday]."

In place of Teixeira, the Yankees were scheduled to move Nick Swisher in from right field, insert Brett Gardner into center field and move Melky Cabrera over to take Swisher's spot for Wednesday night's game. Swisher was penciled in as the No. 2 hitter, bumping Johnny Damon down to third, Teixeira's usual position in the lineup.

Teixeira had a career-high 14-game hitting streak snapped on Tuesday, when he went 0-for-2 and was hit by two pitches. Over the 14-game stretch, Teixeira went 23-for-58 (.397) with five doubles, eight homers and 20 RBIs.
