Yankees rest regulars before break

ANAHEIM -- On the final day of play for the Yankees before the All-Star break, Yankees manager Joe Girardi decided to give many of his starters an added day of rest.

Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher and Johnny Damon were all out of the lineup Sunday against the Angels.

Before the series against the Angels, Girardi alluded to having Posada play two of three games at Angel Stadium, but the only game Posada started in the series was Saturday.

"It is a different look without him in there," Girardi said. "He has played well and I am really pleased with how he has played this first half, and we have had no shoulder issues, which is great."

Posada was replaced in the starting lineup Sunday by backup catcher Jose Molina, who played for the Angels from 2001-2007.

For Damon, July has been a month he would rather forget, as he has collected only four hits in his last 33 at-bats. Damon went hitless in Saturday's game with one walk.

"Johnny has just had a tough July, he isn't staying on his back side at the plate and we decided to give him a day," said Girardi.

During Swisher's six-year career, he has struggled in Anaheim. He is batting .184 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 32 games.

Also, in 43 at-bats against Angels starter John Lackey, Swisher has five hits for a .116 average. Numbers like that were enough to start hot-hitting Eric Hinske in his place in right field.

"It has been a tough matchup for Swisher this series," Girardi said. "We have five outfielders who are playing pretty well. Everyone is going to play, it is just all about winning ballgames."

In Saturday's game, just Hinske's second start with the Yankees, he hit a solo home run in the second inning and a two-run home run in the eighth, marking his seventh career multi-home run game.

"He has played really well for us and has played well for other teams he has played for," Girardi said. "He is swinging the bat well, so he is going to play."
