Top prospects Austin, Williams to play in AFL

Amid a tough year for both, Tyler Austin and Mason Williams will each get another chance to show why they're considered top prospects when they represent the Yankees in the Arizona Fall League. The two outfielders have been assigned to the Scottsdale Scorpions, who begin their slate in October.

Austin is the Yankees' No. 3 prospect as ranked by MLB.com, 69th overall. The 21-year-old is batting .254 for Double-A Trenton heading into Tuesday's action, with six home runs and 39 RBIs. He has missed time due to a wrist injury this season.

The 22-year-old Williams, ranked No. 2 on the Yanks -- behind only catcher Gary Sanchez -- and No. 38 overall, has also struggled at the plate this season, batting just .251 with four home runs, 28 RBIs and 15 stolen bases split between Class A Tampa and Trenton.

It has been a down year for both players after each saw their stock rise dramatically in 2012. Austin hit .322 last season, with 17 home runs and 80 RBIs between four levels of the Yankees' farm system -- including Trenton -- and Williams batted .298 with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

Catcher Peter O'Brien, the Yanks' second-round pick in the 2012 Draft, was also assigned to Scottsdale. He's hitting .288 with 20 homers and 88 RBIs split between Class A Charleston and Tampa.

Austin and Williams will join prospects from the Braves, Giants, Mets and Pirates in Scottsdale.
