Yanks bolster infield depth by acquiring Ryan

BALTIMORE -- With the Yankees unsure if Derek Jeter can return this season, the club acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Mariners late on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named.

Ryan, 31, is generally regarded as one of the top defensive shortstops in the game. In 87 games with Seattle, Ryan batted .192 (50-for-260) with three home runs and 21 RBIs.

In parts of seven Major League seasons with the Cardinals (2007-10) and Seattle (2011-13), Ryan has compiled a lifetime average of .238 with 18 home runs and 186 RBIs in 766 games.

He has appeared in games at shortstop, second base, third base, right field and left field. The Yankees said that a corresponding 40-man roster move will be announced on Wednesday.

Jeter has not played since re-injuring his left ankle on Saturday against the Red Sox, and the club has given no timetable for his return. Eduardo Nunez has been making regular starts at shortstop for New York.
