Yankees sign second baseman Brian Roberts

|

The New York Yankees today announced they have signed two-time All-Star (2005, '07) second baseman Brian Roberts to a Major League contract for the 2014 season.

Roberts, 36, owns a .278 (1,452-for-5,214) career batting average with 810 runs, 351 doubles, 92 home runs, 521 RBI, 278 stolen bases and a .349 on-base percentage in 1,327 games over 13 Major League seasons with the Baltimore Orioles from 2001-13. He is tied with Coco Crisp for fourth among all players since 2001 in stolen bases, trailing only Ichiro Suzuki (472), Carl Crawford (432), and Chone Figgins (337).

The switch-hitting Roberts batted .249 (66-for-265) with 33 runs, 12 doubles, eight home runs and 39RBI in 77 games for Baltimore in 2013, making his Orioles-franchise-high ninth career Opening Day start at second base. He missed 79 games on the disabled list from April 5 to June 29 with a right hamstring strain, but played in 74 of the Orioles' final 80 team games of the season.

Roberts was originally selected by Baltimore in the first supplemental round (50th pick) of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft from the University of South Carolina. He played for the USA in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, batting .438 (7-for-16) with six runs, two doubles, one triple, one home run and two RBI.

The Yankees' 40-man roster now stands at 40.
