NEW YORK -- The Yankees agreed to terms with catcher Francisco Cervelli on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract Thursday, avoiding salary arbitration.

The contract is reportedly worth $700,000, but the club has not confirmed the deal. Cervelli is the front-runner to serve as Brian McCann's backup after appearing in 17 games for the Yanks last season, batting .269 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

Cervelli, who turns 28 in March, was expected to catch the majority of the Yankees' games last season and entered the campaign sharing duties with Chris Stewart. Cervelli fractured his right hand on a foul tip in late April and was then suspended for 50 games in August after violating the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Cervelli's agreement leaves the Yanks with four players eligible for salary arbitration, with figures to be exchanged between players and the club on Friday: outfielder Brett Gardner and pitchers Shawn Kelley, Ivan Nova and David Robertson.
